About the Myrrh-Bearers

The history of the Myrrh Bearing Women

When the Lord Jesus was going throughout Galilee, many women who had received His beneficence left their own homeland and followed after Him. These women ministered unto Him out of their own possessions, even until his crucifixion and entombment. On the Lord’s day, neither losing faith in Him after his death, nor fearing the wrath of the Jewish rulers, they came very early to the tomb to anoint Christ’s body with myrrh-oils and spices. Because the women came to anoint Christ’s body with myrrh, they are called the Myrrh Bearing Women.*

The Myrrh Bearing women provided, and still provide, a powerful ideal to which Orthodox women can strive. First, and foremost, they loved Christ. They followed him so that they could minister to him and his disciples. They were courageous, remaining by His side, even when others were afraid. They proclaimed the Good News, and they devoted themselves to prayer.

“Then they looked up and saw that the stone had already been rolled back. So they entered the tomb, where they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe-and they were a alarmed. `Don’t be alarmed.’ he said. `I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here- he has been raised! Look, here is the place where he was placed. Now go and give this message to his disciples, including Peter. He is going to Galilee ahead of you; there you will see him, just as he told you.’”  (Mt 16:4-6)

Our Women's Group

The Women’s group of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church call themselves 'The Myrrh Bearers' to honor the Myrrh Bearing women.

Our Mission is to provide opportunities for prayer, spiritual growth, service to our parish and our community and fellowship. It is a concrete way to act on our love of the Lord within the context of our parish community.

The Myrrh Bearers is open to all women in the parish and those inquiring about the Orthodox faith. The group typically meets at church on the second Tuesday of each month.

The Myrrh Bearers look forward to welcoming you!

“After Sabbath was over, Mary, the Mother of James, and Salome brought spices to go and anoint the body of Jesus. Very early on Sunday morning, at sunrise, they went to the tomb. On the way they said to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? (It was a very large stone).” (Mt 16:1-4)
